A Unique Residency Program – UAMS South
Each year, three outstanding candidates will be selected to join our rural Family Medicine residency in Magnolia. As the only true rural training program in Arkansas, our program offers a unique experience. We are looking for candidates who truly want to make a difference in our community and South Arkansas, and who have a love for the “small town” feel, like Magnolia has.
We are an unopposed program, with a total of 9 family medicine residents (3-3-3). We believe that our smaller program size leads to more one-on-one interaction with physician attendings, and hands-on learning experiences for our residents. Our facility was completely renovated in 2013, and contains the most up-to-date technology and equipment. We offer lab services, x-ray, and 4-D Ultrasound in-house. Our clinic operates as a team-based, Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of patient care, and interprofessional education (IPE) of learners who rotate through the clinic environment.
Our community partner hospital, Magnolia Regional Medical Center, is the only hospital within a 35 mile radius of our program. This is a 49-bed, acute care facility. While we are a rural program, we also ensure that our residents gain experience with larger hospitals. Our residents complete rotations at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Christus St. Michael Hospital and Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana. Our residents receive a well-rounded education in primary care, acute care, population health, and chronic diseases.
While Magnolia is considered to be a small town, with a population of around 11,000 people, our town is home to the Southern Arkansas University campus and is within a short drive to cities like Texarkana, AR-TX; El Dorado, AR; Little Rock, AR; and Shreveport, LA. Magnolia provides beautiful scenery with a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing for those who enjoy the outdoors. Lake Columbia and Logoly State park are both very close to our facility, as is Lake DeGray near Arkadelphia, or Hot Springs National Park.
We hope you will consider Magnolia, with its diverse population and close-knit neighborhoods. We think you will agree that it is a nice community in which to raise a family and a perfect place for family medicine. Our team looks forward to meeting you!
